    What is a Daiquiri?

A daiquiri is a timeless cocktail that is traditionally made from rum, lime juice and sugar.

This simple cocktail originated in Cuba and dates back to the late 1800's or early 1900's. It was originally served on crushed ice with a spoonful of sugar. After World War II, the daiquiri grew in popularity throughout New York, where it was shaken and served in a chilled coupe glass.

Today, the daiquiri is enjoyed worldwide. It has many variations and is commonly served shaken and served up or blended with fruit and ice.

    Frozen Peach Daiquiris

There is nothing more refreshing than a frozen daiquiri on a hot day! To make this recipe I recommend using a high speed blender (like a VitaMix) to process the mixture until velvety smooth!

    Ingredients

    Ingredients for frozen peach daiquiris.
    • White Rum - Virgin daiquiris can be made by replacing rum with water.
    • Lime Juice - Freshly squeezed, please!
    • Frozen Peach Slices - You can buy frozen peaches or freeze your own. I froze yellow freestone peaches from Palisade, Colorado and the results were incredible!!

Pro Tip: Peachy Keen Frozen Peaches - If freezing your own peaches, I recommend choosing the ripest and juiciest peaches from the peak of peach season. Freeze the peach slices spaced out a sheet tray until solid. Once frozen individually, you can transfer the slices to a freezer safe bag. I like to weight out the bags in 1 pound portions - perfect for 2 servings of frozen daiquiris!

    Procedure

    1. Add frozen peach slices, lime juice and rum to a high speed blender.
    2. Process on medium-high speed for 2 minutes or until velvety smooth. You may need to add a splash of cold water to slightly thin the mixture to the desired consistency.

Pro Tip: Pitchers of Peach Daiquiris - To make a blender-full of peach daiquiris, you may need to blend some of the peaches to make room for the rest. (The peaches take up much less space after processing). My VitaMix blender fits about four large daiquiris (made from 2 pounds of peaches).

Pouring a frozen peach daiquiri from the blender into a coupe glass.
Garnishing the daiquiri with a lime wheel.
    1. Pour daiquiris into desired glassware. Anything works (Solo Cups by the pool can't be beat!), but a pretty coupe makes it feel fun and fancy.
    2. Garnish with a lime wheel and enjoy!

    Shaken Peach Daiquiris

A shaken daiquiri is a timeless bartender favorite! To give this classic a fruity flare, we made this drink with a homemade peach simple syrup. It's delicious!

    Ingredients

Ingredients for shaken peach daiquiri cocktails.
    • White Rum
    • Lime Juice - Freshly squeezed, please!
    • Peach Syrup - Check out the full peach syrup recipe for more details and serving suggestions! (Hint: It's delicious on a waffle!)

How To Make Peach Simple Syrup

This daiquiri recipe replaces a classic simple syrup with a syrup made from peaches. It's easy to make with just peaches, sugar and water. Here's how:

Pouring water into a sauce pot filled with white sugar and fresh peaches.
A pot of boiling peach syrup.
    1. Combine peaches, sugar and water in a medium pot.
    2. Bring mixture to a boil and reduce to simmer for 3 - 5 minutes. Use a spoon to break up the peaches while they are simmering. Set aside and allow to cool to room temperature.
Pouring the peach syrup through cheesecloth and a funnel into a glass jar.
A corked glass bottle of peach syrup surrounded by whole and sliced peaches.
    1. Strain the cooled syrup through a fine mesh strainer and/or cheesecloth. Squeeze out as much syrup as possible.
    2. Peach syrup can be used immediately or made ahead of time and stored in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Shake well before using.

    Procedure

A shaken peach daiquiri being strained into a martini glass with a peach garnish.
    1. In a cocktail tin, combine rum, lime juice and peach syrup. Fill with ice and shake vigorously for 30 seconds.
    2. Strain the peach daiquiri into a chilled martini or coupe glass. (We use both a Hawthorne strainer and fine-mesh strainer, to remove any ice crystals.) Garnish with a lime wedge or fresh peach slices. Cheers!

What Type of Rum is Used is Daiquiris?

Daiquiris are usually made with white rum (also known as light rum). White rum is a spirit made from sugar cane that is either un-aged or lightly aged and filtered (like Bacardi and Don Q).

We like to use Don Q rum because it is inexpensive, widely available and similar to a product that would have been used in the original daiquiri cocktail.

White rum has a light and grassy flavor with some natural sweetness. It's the perfect base to let fresh and fruity flavors shine.

Aged rums take on flavors of caramel and vanilla from time spent in charred oak barrels. While aged rums are not typically used to make daiquiris, I rather enjoy the richness of flavor they can offer. For a much different, richer and caramelized flavor, I recommend trying a daiquiri with an aged rum, such as Plantation OFTD.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What type of alcohol is in a daiquiri?

A daiquiri is traditionally made with light rum (sugarcane spirit).

Do you need to peel peaches for a frozen daiquiri?

No! Frozen peach daiquiris can be made from peaches with or without the peels. I like to use peaches with the peels for additional flavor and color.

Can peach daiquiris be made without alcohol?

Yes! To make a non-alcoholic frozen peach daiquiri, replace the rum with water or unsweetened coconut water.

Unless otherwise noted, all recipes on The Sage Apron are developed using Diamond Crystal Kosher salt. It is a great all-purpose salt for cooking and baking. If using table salt, reduce quantities by about half.
