    A blackberry Shirley Temple is a fun and delicious non-alcoholic beverage option! This recipe uses a homemade blackberry syrup in place of grenadine for a fruity soda that kids and adults will love!

    This festive soda recipe is easily made with blackberries, sugar, water and your favorite Shirley soda!

    Ingredient quantities are listed in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
    • Soda - As pictured, we made this blackberry Shirley Temple with gingerale. However, you can also make this drink with lemon lime soda (like Sprite or Sierra Mist), soda water (for a less sweet option) or ginger beer (for a hint of fresh ginger spice)!
      • Or, for a Roy Rodgers inspired drink, use cola!
    • Blackberry Syrup
    • Optional - Squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice (not pictured)

    Homemade Blackberry Syrup

    This sophisticated spin on a Shirley Temple is made possible with a quick and delicious blackberry syrup! It’s easy to make with just blackberries, water and sugar.

    This syrup is a perfect substitute for grenadine and works great in Shirley Temples, other non-alcoholic drinks and cocktails. (Adults can try it in our Blackberry Lemon Drops, for example!)

    How To Make The Syrup

    1. Start by mashing the blackberries in the bottom of a medium sauce pot.

    2. Then, add the sugar and water and stir to combine. Bring the mixture to a boil and reduce to simmer for 5 minutes. Set aside to cool slightly.

    3. Finally, strain the blackberry syrup through a cheesecloth lined fine mesh strainer. Discard the pulp.

    Use this syrup immediately or store refrigerated in a mason jar for up to one week.

    How To Make Blackberry Shirleys

    When you're ready for a refreshing blackberry Shirley temple, simply pour the syrup and soda over ice. Add a splash of lemon or lime juice for a little tartness, if you'd like. Garnish with extra berries and enjoy!

    Ingredients
     

    Blackberry Shirley Temple

    • Ice as needed
    • 1 ounce Blackberry Syrup
    • 12 ounces ginger ale OR lemon-lime soda (Sprite), OR ginger beer OR soda water
    • 1 squeeze lemon or lime juice optional
    • 3 Blackberries optional garnish

    Blackberry Syrup

    • 8 ounces blackberries
    • 1 Cup granulated sugar
    • 1 Cup water

    Instructions
     

    Blackberry Shirley Temple

    • Gather, measure and prepare the Blackberry Shirley Temple ingredients as listed. 
      Fill a glass with ice and pour over Blackberry Syrup.
    • Fill glass with ginger ale or soda of your choice. If using, add a squeeze of lemon or lime juice and garnish with fresh blackberries. Enjoy!

    Blackberry Syrup

    • Gather, measure and prepare the Blackberry Syrup ingredients as listed. 
      In a small saucepan, mash the blackberries using a muddler or fork. Add sugar and water and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to simmer for 5 minutes.
    • Set syrup aside and allow to cool to room-temperature. Strain the syrup through a cheesecloth lined fine-mesh strainer. Use immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to one week.
    * A Note About Salt

    Unless otherwise noted, all recipes on The Sage Apron are developed using Diamond Crystal Kosher salt. It is a great all-purpose salt for cooking and baking. If using table salt, reduce quantities by about half.
