When we saw Starbuck's latest creation - an Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken espresso... we knew we could replicate something just as delicious at home! Introducing our first copycat recipe: the delicious Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Cold Brew! It's the perfect start to the day!

Starbucks copycat iced brown sugar oat milk iced coffee recipe splashing out of a tall Collins glass with ice. A cocktail shaker, jar of oat milk and pitcher of iced coffee are in the background.

As soon as that warm weather hits, we switch from starting our day with hot coffee to iced. Scott makes the most delicious cold brew! Lately, we've switched from using our standard creamer to using our Homemade Oat Milk. Oat milk tastes so much like cow's milk and adds the perfect creaminess to our morning brew. We don't miss the dairy at all!

Pair this coffee with a Cinnamon Streusel Muffin for the best morning ever!

Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Cold Brew (Phew, Say THAT 5X Fast!)

Okay, so this recipe tastes a LOT like the Starbuck's version. However, since we don't have an espresso machine... or Starbuck's exact recipe... this copycat recipe will be a little different. This drink is made up of three main components: Cold Brew Concentrate, Oat Milk and Brown Sugar Simple Syrup. You can read about each a little more below!

    How To Make Cold Brew

Cold brew is so easy to make and is our absolute favorite way to make iced coffee! By steeping ground coffee in water overnight, you can create a flavorful iced coffee without the over-extracted bitterness of brewing hot.

Cold brew coffee also extracts more caffeine giving us the A.M. boost or midday pick-me-up we often need! For this Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Cold Brew, we made an even stronger Cold Brew Concentrate to replicate the bold flavors of espresso. All we had to do was use a little less water. Here's how to make cold brew!

    Step-By-Step

    1. Measure your coffee beans. We recommend using a well-sourced, high-quality coffee bean and grinding it fresh! If you are lucky enough to live in Denver, near us, try our favorite roasters at Queen City Collective Coffee (not a sponsor, just the best in town). We promise it'll be WAY better than Starbuck's!
    2. Grind your coffee! (Of course, if you don't have a coffee grinder - feel free to purchase pre-ground beans!)
    3. Measure your filtered water and stir to combine with the ground coffee. (As mentioned, the recipe below has a higher ratio of coffee beans to water to create a richer, espresso-like cold brew concentrate. For a classic cold brew we use 60 grams of coffee to 1 liter of water.)
    4. Refrigerate the cold brew overnight, or at least 8 hours. Without the heat, the coffee steeps much slower. That being said, the subtle nuances of the coffee remain and it is well worth the wait! We make a batch of cold brew about twice a week to keep our morning's fueled and coffee fresh!
    5. Strain the cold brew through a coffee filter. (We do this directly into our Chemex coffee maker (also, not a sponsor), but you could put a coffee filter in a fine mesh strainer and strain directly into a jar.) That's it! The coffee is ready to be shaken into this Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Cold Brew recipe! Cheers!

    Oat Milk

If you aren't already, it's time to get on board the oat milk train! Oat milk is the BEST alternative milk option! This plant-based milk is vegan, soy-free, nut-free, dairy-free, nutritious and delicious! Aside from being allergen-friendly, it's just so delicious. Everyone seems to enjoy it so it's no wonder that Starbuck's wanted in on the action.

Now that it is so popular, oat milk is widely available in most every grocery store. Better yet, we have a super easy-breezy recipe for The Best Homemade Oat Milk. (P.S. It only takes five minutes, three ingredients and about $1. What are you waiting for!?) Oat milk adds the perfect creamy deliciousness to this Starbuck's copycat recipe!

    Brown Sugar Simple Syrup

Have you ever ordered an iced coffee to find a pile of sugar crystals piling at the bottom? Who does that!? Simple syrup is the no-brainer solution for sweetening iced beverages. For this Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Cold Brew recipe we're taking Starbuck's lead and creating a Brown Sugar Simple Syrup.

As the name would suggest, it's just as simple as regular old simple syrup...just made with brown sugar, instead. All you need to do is combine equal parts of brown sugar and water in a saucepan. Heat it up, and stir to combine! Leftover Brown Sugar Simple Syrup goes great in whiskey and rum cocktails, too!

    Shake it Up!

When you're ready to treat yourself, combine your Cold Brew Concentrate, Oat Milk, Brown Sugar Simple Syrup and a sprinkle of ground cinnamon in a cocktail tin or mason jar. Add ice and shake, shake, shake to combine! Strain the Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Cold Brew onto some fresh ice or drink it straight from the jar! Starbuck's who!? Pat yourself on your barista back and throw that six bucks in the piggy bank! We can all cheers to that!

If you want to switch it up, try this Starbuck's copycat recipe with your own favorite milk or milk alternative. (Though seriously, our Homemade Oat Milk recipe is worth a try.) If you are lucky enough to have an espresso machine, we recommend using a triple shot as a Cold Brew Concentrate substitute. Not feeling the cinnamon? That's cool, try it with a splash of vanilla extract instead. Other ideas? Let us know how you customized your iced coffee in the comments below!
